The 30th edition of the Acrobatic Gymnastics World Championships closes two weeks of competition and encounters between delegations from five continents. With strong local involvement and opportunities with Cirque du Soleil, Pesaro looks ahead to its next international events.

Thirty years after Luciano Pavarotti’s inaugural concert, the Vitrifrigo Arena welcomed the world of acrobatic gymnastics for AcroPesaro 2026. Organised by PesaroGym 2019 and Esatour Group together with the Italian Gymnastics Federation and World Gymnastics, the event brought together the World Youth Competition and the Junior and Senior World Championships from 17 to 27 September, involving the city in a shared project of sport, art and hospitality.

The Senior competition featured 31 delegations from five continents. The Mayor of Pesaro, Andrea Biancani, attended the final day and highlighted the event’s value for the city:

“AcroPesaro 2026 was a major international event that brought sport, athletes and visitors from all over the world to Pesaro, with significant benefits for the local area. The Vitrifrigo Arena has once again proven to be a strategic venue for hosting events of this scale, which have great economic and social impact on the whole region. We thank PesaroGym 2019 and Esatour Group for the quality of the organisation and for choosing Pesaro. We hope to continue this collaboration and bring Acrobatic Gymnastics back to the city as early as the upcoming events in March and September 2027, further strengthening Pesaro’s sporting and international vocation.”

World Gymnastics: “The atmosphere was wonderful”

Taking stock of the two weeks is Eirini Aindili, member of the World Gymnastics Executive Committee and President of the Appeal Jury, attending on behalf of President Morinari Watanabe. Asked how she experienced this AcroDream, her words put people and hospitality at the centre:

“It was two very beautiful and busy weeks. I was very happy because I was here with wonderful people. The Italian Federation and the Local Organising Committee were perfect. We really had a great time. I think all the athletes, coaches, judges and all the delegations enjoyed this experience. The atmosphere was wonderful and I hope many, many more competitions like this can be organised.”

For Nikolina Hristova, President of the Acrobatic Gymnastics International Technical Committee, Pesaro also marks an important personal milestone:

“It was a wonderful edition of the World Championships and a particularly emotional one for me, as it was my first World Championships as President of the Acrobatic Gymnastics International Technical Committee. I am truly happy that this first experience took place here in Pesaro, at such an important event.

I would like to thank the Italian Gymnastics Federation, the Local Organising Committee, the volunteers and everyone who worked and contributed to the success of this event. I leave with extremely positive feelings and I am very happy with how the competition went. My first World Championships as President will always remain a special memory.”

A discipline that keeps pushing its boundaries

The technical review by National Technical Director Erica Loiacono describes a sport that is growing, increasingly international and still capable of surprises:

“It was a wonderful edition of the World Championships, with the return of major nations and a very high technical level, which made the competition truly spectacular for everyone who came to watch. It was great to host an event of this importance in Italy again, both for the development of our discipline and for the hospitality we were able to offer the delegations, who I believe were very happy with their week in Pesaro.

One of the most significant moments of this edition was certainly Australia’s result in the mixed pair dynamic, a real surprise. It is also an important result because it shows how acrobatic gymnastics continues to expand its boundaries, now involving countries from every continent and opening up more and more to Oceania.”

She then turns to next season and the European event:

“Looking ahead, we face a season of major change. There will be many age-group transitions, with lots of gymnasts moving up from junior to senior, and this will bring a real revolution in the teams. At the next European Championships we will therefore see many new faces and can expect another great show, with a very high technical level.

Compared with the 2021 European Championships, also held here in Pesaro, the picture will be completely different. That edition was affected by the Covid period, which inevitably impacted preparation and the technical level of the competition. Today acrobatic gymnastics has grown a great deal, and the next European Championships will fully showcase this evolution.”

Italy: participation, education and growth prospects

Giuseppe Raiola, Head of the Italian Delegation, looks back on the two weeks, also recalling the painful circumstance that prevented the Italian trio from competing in the Senior event:

“It was a great event, organised in a setting now well proven for sporting events of this level. Our Federation presented itself in the best possible way in both weeks: first at the Junior and Youth World Championships, then at the 30th Senior World Championships. Unfortunately, on this last occasion, Italy was unable to compete due to a serious bereavement suffered by one of the gymnasts in the Italian trio, a painful and entirely unforeseeable circumstance that led to the withdrawal of our team.

This was my first experience as head of delegation at an international event in this discipline, and I was able to get to know an extremely interesting sport even better, one that deserves more recognition and wider promotion across the country. We also discussed this with our Technical Director, considering ways to expand contacts with regional bodies and affiliated clubs, to spread acrobatic gymnastics more widely throughout Italy.

These were also two very important weeks in terms of relationships and networking. Events like this allow you to meet people and delegations from all over the world, and once again confirm the great attention the Italian Gymnastics Federation devotes to all its disciplines, including those that may still be less well known to the general public but have remarkable growth potential.

Another key aspect is coach education. It is one of the areas we must keep working on, because in acrobatic gymnastics too, building and developing a well-prepared technical staff is essential. With the Technical Directorate we addressed various aspects of the discipline’s development, with one goal: creating the conditions for Italian acrobatic gymnastics to continue its growth and reach ever higher levels.

The next event will be the European Championships, which return here to Pesaro in March. It will be another important opportunity to measure our progress and further improve Italy’s participation.”

Cirque du Soleil in Pesaro in search of new talent

AcroPesaro 2026 also offered a glimpse of the opportunities acrobatic gymnastics opens up in the entertainment world. Taras Shevchenko, from Cirque du Soleil’s casting team, came to Pesaro to scout new talent among the athletes.

His presence underlines the link between sport and art: technical preparation, expressiveness and teamwork, all central to the discipline, can also find a place on an international stage, opening new paths in gymnasts’ careers.

A city involved, inside and outside the arena

The event’s international dimension was matched by strong local involvement: 14 hotels helped host the delegations, while schools took part through student volunteers and by designing the logo. Numerous dance schools and gymnastics clubs from Pesaro and other cities came to the arena to perform in the Pop Up Break Shows, sharing the stage of a world event.

Sport and art also came together at the Senior opening ceremony, with the Dance of the Flags dedicated to the five continents and 34 dancers from Center Stage Pesaro, Laura Mungherli’s school, which is itself celebrating thirty years of activity.

Thanks from the organisers

Marco Cadeddu, Executive Director of the Local Organising Committee, sums up a team effort:

“Bringing an event of this scale to Pesaro and seeing its great success makes us all proud. It is the result of shared work and collaboration between institutions, organisers and local partners. I thank World Gymnastics and the Italian Gymnastics Federation for their trust and support. Special thanks go to all the volunteers and the extraordinary staff of the Local Organising Committee, who made all this possible with passion, professionalism and tireless commitment. On behalf of the organisation, thank you to everyone who helped welcome the world to Pesaro and make every delegation feel part of our city.”

AcroPesaro 2026 comes to a close, but the AcroDream lives on: in shared emotions, in the bonds formed and in the dreams of the young athletes who stepped onto this floor. Pesaro looks forward to 2027, with the Acrobatic European Championships in March and the Aerobic European Championships in September, to meet, feel and dream together once again.

World Gymnastics: «O ambiente foi fantástico»

Agradeço à World Gymnastics e à Federação Italiana de Ginástica a confiança e o apoio.
